Comics, music, Youtube, boorus, Wikipedia, Finnish culture, and more. Oh, and comics. Ask Patchouli Knowledge for details.

  1. Items!

by , 29 Apr 2011 at 10:41 am (Juniper Berries, vol. III)
I have a childhood memory about our neighbor, a taxi driver, telling me that sometimes you can be "too tired to sleep". Back then, I was usually forced to go to bed well before I felt any need to close my eyes, so I found his words really hard to comprehend.

In this day and age, it is not uncommon at all for me to be "too tired to sleep". That is why yesterday, when I should have headed home to sleep, I decided to find one or two comics at a public library instead. ...
  2. Waking Up in a Different Country

by , 18 Apr 2011 at 6:53 am (Juniper Berries, vol. III)
So we had the 36th parliamentary election of our history yesterday, and yes, the end result does surprise me.

Finland has a unicameral parliament of 200 representatives, with elections every fourth year by default. For the elections, the country is divided into 15 electoral districts, and the seats for each district are assigned according to the so-called d'Hondt method. This system has produced a multi-party system, where the number of major parties is typically three or four and ...

  3. It Keeps Snowing Over Here

by , 30 Mar 2011 at 6:45 am (Juniper Berries, vol. III)
Yesterday I read all of "Blacksad 2: Arctic-Nation", written by Juan DÃ*az Canales and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido (in Finnish translation -- "Blacksad 2: Valkoinen valtakunta", ISBN 978-952-5602-64-7; also available in English under the title "Arctic Nation").

May have been my mood, but I enjoyed this second volume more than the first one. The detailed color art, the settings, most of the character designs... While I am no specialist when it comes ...

  4. The Charms of Wolf-girls Are Many...

by , 26 Mar 2011 at 8:04 pm (Juniper Berries, vol. III)
Yesterday I read all of Spice & Wolf II by Isuna Hasekura and Keito Koume (ISBN 978-0-316-10232-2). See "What a Beautiful Sky..." (August 2010) for my very brief review on the first volume.

Reading about the franchise, we are well past the peak of the S&W hype. Or at the very least, Japan is. The two anime seasons aired in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The original run of the light novel series, the basis of the whole franchise, has concluded recently. Luckily for ...

  5. Warps in Space and Time

by , 6 Mar 2011 at 12:17 pm (Juniper Berries, vol. III)
Yesterday I finished reading "Kapteeni Britannia" (ISBN 978-952-233-067-3). The book is a Finnish-language hardcover collection of comic stories about Marvel's Captain Britain -- more specifically, containing the "Jaspers' Warp" storyline written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Alan Davis, originally published from 1982 through 1984.

"Jasper's Warp" makes for a very enjoyable reading experience, somewhere halfway between "Superman: Red Son" and ...
